Reflections, Insights, and Wonderings

What does the AAC journey look like? What does the AAC journey feel like? Where are you on the AAC journey?

What is communication? Who is responsible for communication? How can we be optimal communication partners?

What if AAC immersion, like any language immersion, was the standard form of AAC implementation? What would AAC immersion communicate to AAC users?

How to we reclaim creativity as a form of expression using AAC? Why is self-advocacy important for children?

What relationship does imagination play in AAC? in storytelling? in transforming our world together?

“Every snow crystal begins with a hexagonal center, the design and shape of the branches are then determined by their journey through the sky to earth. Every snow crystal has a unique story to tell. With the help of technology, their stories are known…” – Wilson Bentley

Every person’s story from birth is shaped by their journey through life. Every person has a unique story to tell. With the help of AAC, their stories are known.

Communication is a shared responsibility. It is relational. There is the giver and the receiver. The person expressing themselves and the listener. The writer and the reader. The musician and the serenaded. It is a gift to deeply listen and truly hear what someone says from their heart and mind. When we listen not only with our ears but also with our eyes, our heart, our wonder, it is then when we witness one another. In giving deep listening presence in that moment, we receive the light, shadow, color, and design of someone’s heart and mind.

Language immersion is the existence of language that values our existence.

What are the ways you express yourself? Words, stories, poems? Music, song, dance? Art, painting, graphic design? Craft, weaving, knitting?

Without imagination, we would not grow into new possibilities…
