A journey is not a destination, though in every journey there is here and now, this moment. There are spaces in the doing and pause before the next thing. Often we need a reminder to practice: Here, breathe. Now, breathe. The day slips by, yet when we take a moment, even a few moments we can reclaim these spaces, these pauses. Building from already established routines and rituals can help weave in the spaces and pause.
Our family sits together for dinner. It’s an established routine in our daily life. This is what was added about once every week or two.
It is a simple vase, but it is also a reminder of the practice. A practice of gathering plants and flowers of the earth that holds us. Singing and humming in gratitude creates a vibration in the body that helps me ground. It’s a way to self-soothe and come down from the stimulation of life, the demands and questions and uncertainties. Learning to quiet and quietly noticing; learning to see the uniqueness and beauty of each that I hold, that I find. Thanking the plants, thanking the presence, thanking the space.

Appreciation for here and now. In the arranging and care of each stem, each species there’s breathing. The vase, now full of life, is placed in the center of the table. A reminder of a practice of centering and of gratitude. The plants communicate their readiness to return to the earth about the same time my body needs the grounding again. Back to the practice, finding the space and pause, creating the quiet and noticing for the nervous system to recoup just a little bit, just enough.
